History of Uzbekistan

The history of the peoples, states, and societies of the territory now known as Uzbekistan, from ancient Central Asian cultures to the present.

Sogdia: An ancient Iranian-speaking region of Central Asia centered on the Zeravshan and Kashka-Darya valleys. Its cities and merchants shaped the territory before and during early Islamic rule.
Bactria: An ancient region centered on the upper Amu Darya basin, spanning parts of modern Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Its southern lands connect Uzbekistan’s history to early Central Asian kingdoms.
Timur: A Central Asian conqueror who founded the Timurid Empire and made Samarkand his capital. His campaigns and patronage reshaped the region’s late medieval political and cultural landscape.
Russian Turkestan: A region of the Russian Empire in Central Asia, administered from Tashkent from 1867 to 1917. Its administration placed much of modern Uzbekistan under Russian imperial governance.
History of Kazakhstan: The history of the peoples and states of the territory now known as Kazakhstan. Its steppe-centered political history contrasts with Uzbekistan’s oasis-city traditions.
Mongol conquest of Central Asia: The thirteenth-century campaigns by the Mongol Empire that brought much of Central Asia under Mongol rule. The conquest transformed the region’s political order and devastated major cities.

Basmachi movement: An armed resistance movement against Soviet rule in Central Asia, active mainly from 1917 into the 1930s. Its struggle shows the contested establishment of Soviet authority in the region.
