History of Virginia

The history of Virginia spans Indigenous societies, English colonization, colonial and revolutionary politics, slavery and secession, and the state’s development within the United States.

Powhatan Confederacy: A powerful alliance of Indigenous communities in the Chesapeake region led by Wahunsenacawh. Its diplomacy and conflict shaped the first decades of English settlement.

United States Constitution: The 1787 framework establishing the federal government of the United States. Virginia’s ratification debate and political thinkers influenced the Constitution’s adoption and amendments.
Nathaniel Bacon: An English-born Virginia planter who led the 1676 rebellion against Governor William Berkeley. His uprising became a defining challenge to colonial authority.
