History of wind power

The history of wind power traces how people developed technologies to convert moving air into useful work, from sailing and milling to electricity generation.

Sailing ship: A vessel propelled primarily by sails that capture wind energy. Sails were among the earliest technologies for turning wind into transport and trade.
Horizontal-axis wind turbine: A wind turbine whose main rotor shaft is parallel to the ground and generally aligned with the wind. This configuration became the dominant design for large modern wind turbines.
Charles F. Brush: An American inventor whose 1888 Cleveland wind turbine supplied electricity to his home and laboratory. Brush's machine demonstrated that wind could generate electricity for practical household use.
Wind-powered water pumping: The use of wind-driven machines to lift groundwater or move water between locations. Water pumping remained one of wind power's most widespread practical uses before rural electrification.
Renewable energy: Energy obtained from sources that are replenished naturally on human timescales. Wind became a major component of modern efforts to replace fossil-fuel electricity.
Persian windmill: A vertical-axis windmill developed in the region of present-day Iran for grinding grain and pumping water. Its early design shows wind power serving stationary work centuries before modern turbines.
Vertical-axis wind turbine: A wind turbine whose rotor turns around a vertical shaft, independent of wind direction at the rotor level. Its alternative geometry has repeatedly offered a different route from conventional horizontal rotors.
Poul la Cour: A Danish scientist and inventor who advanced wind-generated electricity and trained wind-turbine technicians. La Cour helped establish Denmark's early technical and educational foundations for wind electricity.
Rural electrification: The extension of electrical service to rural communities and farms. Small wind generators offered isolated farms electricity where utility lines were unavailable.
Intermittent renewable energy: Electricity from renewable sources whose output varies with weather or other changing natural conditions. Wind's variable output prompted new approaches to balancing supply and demand.
