History of writing

The study of how writing systems originated and changed, and how societies used them to record, communicate, govern, and preserve knowledge.

Cuneiform: A writing system developed in ancient Mesopotamia, first used for accounting and later for many languages and genres. Its earliest tablets show how administrative marks became a durable writing system.
Logography: A writing principle in which signs represent words or morphemes. Many early scripts used signs for meaningful units rather than individual sounds.
Clay tablet: A flat or rounded piece of clay used as a surface for writing, often with a stylus. Wet clay made wedge-shaped impressions practical in early Mesopotamia.
Mesopotamian accounting: The recording of goods, labor, and transactions in ancient Mesopotamian institutions. Accounting was among the earliest documented purposes of writing.
Standardization of writing: The adoption of shared conventions for writing forms, spelling, and scripts across a community or institution. Standard forms helped administrations and readers work across regions and generations.
Egyptian hieroglyphs: A writing system using logographic, consonantal, and determinative signs in ancient Egypt. Its early monuments offer a distinct path from Mesopotamian writing.
Syllabary: A writing system whose signs generally represent syllables. Syllabic scripts show one way writing can represent speech sounds.
Papyrus: A writing material made from strips of the papyrus plant, widely used in the ancient Mediterranean. Its sheets supported portable documents and scroll-based literary culture.
Legal code: A systematically organized collection of rules issued or recognized by a governing authority. Written laws made rules more durable and available for institutional use.
Decipherment: The process of recovering the meaning of an unknown or unreadable writing system. Decipherment has reopened historical records that were inaccessible for centuries.
