The history of Yunnan traces the region’s early kingdoms, incorporation into Chinese empires, and development as a southwestern Chinese province shaped by diverse peoples and borderland exchange.

Dian Kingdom: An ancient kingdom centered around Lake Dian in present-day Yunnan, known from archaeological finds and Han-era records. Its rise before Han rule anchors Yunnan’s earliest documented state history.
Tusi system: An imperial system that recognized hereditary local leaders to govern frontier communities under Chinese suzerainty. Local chieftains governed many communities while successive dynasties extended authority across Yunnan.
Yi people: An ethnic group concentrated in southwestern China, with diverse languages and regional cultural traditions. Yi communities have long shaped Yunnan’s highland societies and frontier politics.

Bai people: An ethnic group centered mainly around the Erhai region of Yunnan, with a distinct language and cultural traditions. Bai society was central to the Dali region’s kingdoms and later history.
Xinhai Revolution: The 1911 revolution that ended the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China. Yunnanese forces helped launch the provincial break from Qing rule.
Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple: A group of three Buddhist pagodas near Dali, built between the ninth and thirteenth centuries. The monuments preserve the religious and architectural legacy of the Dali region.
