History of Zimbabwe

The history of the region and state now known as Zimbabwe, from ancient societies through colonial rule to independence and the present.

Great Zimbabwe: A medieval stone-built city and political center in southern Africa, flourishing between roughly the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. Its monumental architecture and trade networks anchor the region’s precolonial history.
British South Africa Company: A chartered company that governed and exploited territories in southern Africa from 1889 under Cecil Rhodes’s influence. Its occupation established the colonial administration that became Southern Rhodesia.
Cecil Rhodes: A British imperialist and businessman whose mining interests and political influence drove British expansion in southern Africa. His company’s territorial ambitions helped create colonial Rhodesia.
Rhodesia: The unrecognized state declared by Southern Rhodesia’s white-minority government in 1965, lasting until 1979. Its unilateral independence intensified international isolation and the liberation war.
Southern Rhodesia: The British colony and self-governing territory that became Zimbabwe at independence in 1980. Its colonial status contrasts with the sovereign state established after the liberation struggle.
Mapungubwe: An early southern African kingdom centered near the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, flourishing around 1220–1290. Its regional trade and political traditions preceded Great Zimbabwe.
First Matabele War: The 1893–1894 conflict in which the British South Africa Company defeated the Ndebele kingdom. The war helped secure company control over territory later named Southern Rhodesia.
Lobengula: The second king of the Ndebele kingdom, ruling from 1868 until his defeat and disappearance during the 1893–1894 war. His conflict with the British South Africa Company marked the onset of conquest.
Rhodesian Bush War: The 1964–1979 conflict between Rhodesian forces and African nationalist movements seeking majority rule. The war and its political pressures led to negotiations for a transition to independence.
Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland: A 1953–1963 political federation of Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland under British oversight. The federation briefly altered Southern Rhodesia’s constitutional position before nationalist pressure ended it.
