History painting
A genre of painting that depicts narratives from history, mythology, religion, or literature, often with multiple figures and elevated subject matter.
Hierarchy of genres: A ranking of artistic genres that traditionally placed history painting above portraiture, landscape, still life, and genre scenes. This ranking explains why history painting was treated as the highest form of painting.
Renaissance humanism: An intellectual movement that revived classical learning and emphasized human capacities, history, and civic life. Humanist interests renewed demand for paintings about ancient history and exemplary figures.
Sistine Chapel ceiling: Michelangelo’s fresco cycle in the Sistine Chapel, painted between 1508 and 1512, depicting biblical scenes and figures. Its monumental biblical narratives exemplify history painting’s religious and public ambitions.
Genre painting: Painting that depicts scenes of everyday life, domestic activity, or ordinary people. Academic theory ranked its ordinary subjects below history painting’s elevated narratives.
Narrative painting: Painting that communicates a story through depicted events, figures, and visual details. History painting is a prestigious, often large-scale form of narrative painting.
Raphael: An Italian Renaissance painter known for balanced compositions and influential works on religious and classical subjects. His Vatican frescoes became models for ambitious narrative composition.
The Oath of the Horatii: Jacques-Louis David’s 1784 painting of three Roman brothers swearing to defend their city. Its staged Roman story turned history painting into a vehicle for civic virtue.
Portrait painting: Painting that represents a specific person or group, usually emphasizing identity and appearance. Portraiture focuses on individual likeness rather than an invented or inherited narrative.
History painting sketch: A preparatory drawing or painted study used to plan a history painting’s composition, figures, or color. Artists used preliminary studies to organize complex scenes before executing finished works.
Accademia di San Luca: An artists’ academy in Rome, founded in the sixteenth century, that promoted artistic theory and training. The academy helped institutionalize the status and instruction of history painting.
