HIV/AIDS activism

HIV/AIDS activism is grassroots and political organizing that challenges the epidemic’s effects, demands effective treatment and care, and contests stigma and unequal treatment.

ACT UP: A direct-action advocacy group founded in New York City in 1987 to end the AIDS crisis. Its confrontational campaigns made treatment access and government inaction visible.
Gay Men's Health Crisis: A New York nonprofit founded in 1982 to provide services and advocacy during the AIDS crisis. It was among the earliest organized responses to AIDS in the United States.
Cleve Jones: An American AIDS and LGBTQ rights activist who founded the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. His memorial project turned collective remembrance into a force for public advocacy.
FDA accelerated approval: A US regulatory pathway allowing earlier approval of drugs for serious conditions based on surrogate endpoints. AIDS drug activism helped build pressure for faster access to promising treatments.
Pharmaceutical industry: The sector that discovers, develops, manufactures, and sells medicines. Activists negotiated with and protested companies over drug prices, trials, and access.
Die-ins: A form of protest in which participants lie down to represent people killed or endangered by a policy. AIDS activists used them to make deaths and institutional neglect impossible to ignore.
AIDS Memorial Quilt: A vast memorial made of fabric panels commemorating people who died of AIDS. Its 1987 debut made private loss a public demand for recognition and action.
Vito Russo: An American LGBTQ historian and activist who helped found ACT UP. He connected AIDS activism with demands for accurate media representation.
HIV/AIDS in the media: The portrayal and coverage of HIV, AIDS, and affected communities in news and popular culture. Activists contested coverage that reinforced stigma or obscured government responsibility.
Medical paternalism: A model of care in which clinicians make decisions for patients without meaningful patient participation. AIDS activists challenged the exclusion of patients from research and treatment decisions.
