HMS Challenger expedition

A British scientific voyage aboard HMS Challenger from 1872 to 1876 that systematically surveyed ocean depths, seafloor deposits, and marine life.

Challenger deep-sea sounding: The expedition’s use of weighted lines to measure ocean depth and collect bottom samples. Soundings mapped depths at hundreds of stations and revealed the Mariana region’s extreme depth.
