Hōgen Rebellion

A Japanese civil conflict in 1156 in which rival imperial factions and warrior clans fought over succession and political authority. Its outcome strengthened the Taira and Minamoto clans and increased the political influence of warriors.

Emperor Go-Shirakawa: A Japanese emperor who reigned from 1155 to 1158 and later wielded power as a retired sovereign. His faction prevailed, and his authority became central to the settlement after the fighting.
