Holy Roman Emperor

Holy Roman Emperor was the title borne by rulers who claimed imperial authority over the Holy Roman Empire, a shifting polity in western and central Europe from the Middle Ages to 1806.

Charlemagne: Frankish king crowned emperor in Rome by Pope Leo III in 800. His coronation became a foundational precedent for later western emperors.
Prince-elector: One of the high-ranking secular or ecclesiastical rulers entitled to elect the Holy Roman king. Their votes selected the king who could later become emperor.
