Holy Roman Empire

A Central European polity of territories under an elected emperor, lasting from 962 until its dissolution in 1806. Its rulers shared authority with princes, cities, and ecclesiastical institutions.

Imperial Election: The procedure by which German electors chose the ruler who would become Holy Roman Emperor. Electors selected emperors, making dynastic succession subject to formal political choice.
Otto I: King of East Francia who was crowned emperor in 962, conventionally marking the Empire’s beginning. His coronation established the imperial line associated with the Empire’s traditional starting date.
Ottonian dynasty: The dynasty that ruled East Francia and the Empire from the tenth to the early eleventh century. Ottonian kings established durable links between German kingship and imperial coronation.

Hohenstaufen: A German dynasty whose members ruled as kings and emperors during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Its conflicts with Italian cities and the papacy exposed limits on imperial power.
Peace of Augsburg: The 1555 settlement that allowed rulers in the Empire to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism for their territories. It managed religious division through territorial authority, while excluding other confessions.
Byzantine Empire: The eastern Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople, that endured until 1453. Its continuous government and eastern Roman identity differed from the Empire’s later, elective western title.
