Homiletics

Homiletics is the study and practice of preparing and delivering sermons, especially within Christian theology. It connects biblical interpretation and theological claims with oral communication to a congregation.

Exegesis: Exegesis is the critical interpretation of a text to establish its meaning in context. It grounds a sermon in close attention to the biblical passage being preached.
Sermon: A sermon is a religious address that interprets scripture or teaches beliefs to a gathered audience. It is the central form homiletics prepares and evaluates.
Early Christian preaching: Early Christian preaching is the proclamation and interpretation of Christian teaching in the first centuries of the church. It reveals the practices from which later Christian sermon traditions grew.
Expository preaching: Expository preaching develops a sermon by explaining a biblical passage in its textual context. It contrasts with approaches organized primarily around a topic or present-day question.
Liturgical preaching: Liturgical preaching is preaching situated within the ordered worship of a Christian liturgy. It shows how a sermon relates to readings, prayers, and ritual actions in worship.
Hermeneutics: Hermeneutics is the study of interpretation and the principles used to understand texts. It supplies broader interpretive principles that guide biblical exposition in preaching.
Biblical preaching: Biblical preaching is the communication of a message grounded in the interpretation of biblical texts. It shows how scriptural interpretation becomes the substance of a sermon.
Augustine of Hippo: Augustine of Hippo was a late-antique Christian theologian and bishop whose works shaped Western Christianity. His On Christian Doctrine includes influential guidance on teaching and communicating Christian truth.
Topical preaching: Topical preaching organizes a sermon around a subject and draws on one or more scriptural passages. Its subject-first structure differs from preaching that follows a particular passage.
Evangelistic preaching: Evangelistic preaching presents the Christian message with the aim of inviting response or conversion. It illustrates preaching directed toward people being introduced to or challenged by Christian faith.
