Hong Chengchou

Hong Chengchou was a Ming scholar-official and military commander who surrendered to the Qing in 1642 and later served the new dynasty.

Chongzhen Emperor: The last emperor of the Ming dynasty, who ruled from 1627 until his death in 1644. Hong held senior military and administrative posts under the emperor during the Ming crisis.
Late Ming dynasty: The final period of Ming rule, marked by fiscal strain, rebellion, and pressure from the Manchu-led state. The late Ming crisis formed the setting for Hong’s military career and eventual surrender.
Qing conquest of China: The seventeenth-century military expansion through which the Qing established rule over most of China. Hong’s service aided the Qing state as it expanded beyond Manchuria.
Shi Kefa: A Ming official and military commander who resisted the Qing and died defending Yangzhou in 1645. His resistance contrasts with Hong’s decision to surrender and serve the Qing.

Wu Sangui: A Ming general who opened Shanhai Pass to Qing forces in 1644 and later rebelled against Qing rule. Like Hong, Wu’s defection transferred Ming military expertise to the Qing, though at a different stage.
Battle of Songjin: A 1641–1642 Qing siege and campaign that ended in a major Ming defeat in northeast China. Hong commanded Ming forces in this campaign before surrendering to the Qing.
