Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong Island is an island in southern Hong Kong, separated from the Kowloon Peninsula by Victoria Harbour. It contains the territory’s historic urban core and major financial districts.

Victoria Harbour: A natural harbour separating Hong Kong Island from the Kowloon Peninsula. This harbour forms the island’s defining northern boundary and links its urban history to Kowloon.
Central and Western District: A Hong Kong district on the island’s northwestern shore that includes Central and Sheung Wan. Its waterfront contains the island’s central business district and historic urban core.
First Opium War: A war between Britain and Qing China from 1839 to 1842, ending in Qing defeat and a treaty settlement. The war led directly to the cession of Hong Kong Island to Britain.
MTR: Hong Kong’s rapid-transit railway network, serving the city and connecting it to mainland China. Its Island line and cross-harbour routes connect the island’s main districts with Kowloon.
Hong Kong skyline: The dense cluster of high-rise buildings along Hong Kong’s harbourfront, especially on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon. The island’s northern waterfront supplies many of the skyline’s best-known towers.
Kowloon Peninsula: A peninsula extending south from mainland China, across Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong Island. It is the island’s closest major urban counterpart across the harbour.
Wan Chai: A district on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, east of Central. Its dense urban fabric shows how development extends east along the island’s harbourfront.
Treaty of Nanking: The 1842 treaty that ended the First Opium War and ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain. Its terms formally transferred the island into British control.
Cross-Harbour Tunnel: A road tunnel beneath Victoria Harbour linking Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, opened in 1972. It was the first road tunnel to provide a direct fixed crossing between the island and Kowloon.
Bank of China Tower: A 1990 Hong Kong skyscraper designed by I. M. Pei, located in Central on Hong Kong Island. Its angular profile became one of the island’s most recognizable architectural landmarks.
