Honor killing

Honor killing is murder by relatives or community members who claim the victim has brought dishonor on a family or group, often through perceived defiance of gender or sexual norms.

Coercive control: A pattern of threats, isolation, intimidation, and restrictions used to dominate another person. Control over a victim’s choices can precede or accompany threats of so-called honor violence.
Victim-blaming: Attributing responsibility for abuse or harm to the person who experienced it. Claims of dishonor shift blame from perpetrators onto victims for their choices or identities.
Crimes of passion: A legal or popular label for a violent offense said to arise from sudden intense emotion. Honor killings are often planned or socially sanctioned, unlike the stereotype of an impulsive outburst.
United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women: A 1993 United Nations declaration affirming women’s right to live free from violence. Its framework treats violence justified by custom or tradition as a human-rights concern.
Gender-based violence: Violence directed at people because of gender, gender roles, or unequal power relations. Honor killings are one lethal form of violence enforcing gendered expectations.
Domestic violence shelter: A confidential service providing temporary accommodation and support to people escaping abuse. Shelters can offer safety when someone faces threats from relatives or community members.
Domestic homicide: The killing of a person by a current or former intimate partner or family member. This broader category includes family killings without requiring a claimed motive of restoring honor.
Istanbul Convention: A Council of Europe treaty requiring measures to prevent and address violence against women and domestic violence. It requires parties to reject culture, custom, religion, or so-called honor as justifications for violence.
Forced marriage: A marriage entered without the free and full consent of one or both people. Refusing or escaping a forced marriage can trigger threats framed as family dishonor.
Witness protection: Measures used to protect people who testify or cooperate in criminal investigations. Survivors and witnesses may face intimidation that obstructs investigations and prosecutions.
