Honor

Honor is social and moral standing associated with perceived integrity, reputation, and adherence to shared norms. Its standards vary across cultures and historical periods.

Reputation: The beliefs others hold about a person or group, formed through perceived conduct and character. Honor depends partly on how a person’s conduct is judged and remembered by others.
Social norm: A shared expectation about appropriate behavior within a group or society. Norms supply the standards against which honorable conduct is judged.
Honesty: The quality of communicating truthfully and avoiding deception. Honesty is one possible basis of honor, but honorable conduct can involve broader duties.
Roman virtue: The Roman ideal of virtus, emphasizing qualities such as courage, duty, and public service. Roman virtus tied honorable standing to civic action and masculine excellence.
Dignity: The inherent worth of a person, often understood as deserving respect regardless of status or achievement. Dignity grounds claims to respect that do not depend on reputation or social rank.
Social status: A person’s or group’s recognized position within a social hierarchy. Honor can confer status, while status can shape whose honor receives recognition.
Obedience: Compliance with an instruction or authority, whether or not the instruction is morally sound. Following rules alone does not establish integrity or earn honor.
Bushido: A name for ethical ideals associated with Japan’s samurai, whose meanings varied across periods. Bushido offers a historically influential example of honor articulated through a warrior tradition.
Shame: A painful sense of exposure or diminished standing arising from perceived failure or disapproval. Shame marks the threatened or lost standing that honor systems seek to protect.
Sanction (social science): A social response that rewards conformity or penalizes violation of a norm. Approval and punishment enforce the conduct expected by an honor system.
