Hot Jupiter

A gas giant orbiting very close to its star, typically completing an orbit in fewer than ten days. Intense stellar heating gives it extremely high atmospheric temperatures.

Orbital migration: A change in an object's orbit caused by gravitational interactions or forces acting on orbiting material. Migration offers a route for giant planets to reach the close-in orbits hot Jupiters occupy.
Gas giant: A large planet composed predominantly of hydrogen and helium, with no solid surface like Earth's. Hot Jupiters are close-orbiting members of the gas-giant class.
Core accretion: A planet-formation model in which a solid core grows and then accretes a substantial gas envelope. It explains how hot Jupiters could form farther out before moving inward.
51 Pegasi b: An exoplanet orbiting the Sun-like star 51 Pegasi, announced in 1995 as the first planet found around a Sun-like main-sequence star. Its discovery established that giant planets could orbit remarkably close to ordinary stars.
Warm Jupiter: A gas giant on an intermediate-period orbit, farther from its star than a typical hot Jupiter but closer than Jupiter is to the Sun. Warm Jupiters occupy the less intensely heated, longer-period edge of close-in giant planets.
Tidal interaction: A gravitational interaction that deforms orbiting bodies and can exchange energy and angular momentum. Tides can alter a hot Jupiter’s orbit and synchronize its rotation.
Exoplanet: A planet orbiting a star other than the Sun, or a stellar remnant. Hot Jupiters are exoplanets identified by their size and close orbits.
Disk instability: A planet-formation model in which gravitationally unstable regions of a protoplanetary disk collapse directly into giant planets. It offers an alternative route to forming the giant planets that later become hot Jupiters.
HD 209458 b: A transiting hot Jupiter orbiting the star HD 209458, also known as Osiris. Its transit enabled early direct measurements of an exoplanetary atmosphere.
Hot Neptune: A Neptune-sized or Neptune-mass planet orbiting close to its star and receiving intense stellar irradiation. Hot Neptunes share close-in conditions but are substantially smaller than hot Jupiters.
