Houari Boumédiène

Houari Boumédiène was an Algerian military officer and politician who ruled Algeria from 1965 until his death in 1978. He pursued state-led development and a prominent role for Algeria in the Non-Aligned Movement.

Algerian War: A war from 1954 to 1962 in which Algerian nationalists fought French colonial rule. Boumédiène commanded National Liberation Army forces during the war, building the military influence that shaped his later rule.
