House of York

A branch of the English royal family descended from Edmund of Langley, Duke of York. Its members ruled England from 1461 to 1470 and from 1471 to 1485.

Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York: A son of Edward III and founder of the Yorkist line of the English royal family. His descendants formed the branch whose royal claim drove Yorkist politics.
Edward IV: King of England from 1461 to 1470 and from 1471 until his death in 1483. He established Yorkist rule in the two reigns that define the branch's first royal period.
Battle of Towton: A major battle of the Wars of the Roses fought in 1461, won by Edward IV's Yorkist forces. Its outcome secured Edward IV's first accession to the throne.
Battle of Stoke Field: A 1487 battle in which Henry VII defeated Yorkist rebels led by John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln. The defeat suppressed a major Yorkist attempt to restore its claim after Bosworth.
Richard of Conisburgh, 3rd Earl of Cambridge: A son of Edmund of Langley whose marriage connected the York line to the Mortimer claim to the throne. His descendants inherited a claim through both York and Mortimer ancestry.
George, Duke of Clarence: A younger brother of Edward IV who was executed for treason in 1478. His shifting loyalties exposed fractures within the royal Yorkist family.
Battle of Barnet: A 1471 battle in which Edward IV defeated forces supporting the restored Henry VI. The Yorkist victory helped Edward regain the crown.
Perkin Warbeck: A pretender who claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, one of the princes in the Tower, and challenged Henry VII. His claim shows how Yorkist identity remained a political resource after 1485.
Richard of York, 3rd Duke of York: A magnate who asserted his claim to the English throne and led the Yorkist faction during the Wars of the Roses. His claim turned dynastic descent into open conflict with the Lancastrian king.
Richard III: King of England from 1483 to 1485, the last monarch of the House of York. His defeat ended Yorkist rule and the dynasty's direct hold on the crown.
