Houston Ship Channel

The Houston Ship Channel is a deepwater waterway connecting the Port of Houston to the Gulf of Mexico through Galveston Bay and Buffalo Bayou. It carries oceangoing ships between Houston and the Gulf.

Dredging: The excavation of sediment from the bottom of waterways to deepen or maintain navigable channels. Repeated dredging preserves the depth needed for large ships along the channel.

Petroleum refining: The industrial process of separating and converting crude oil into fuels and other products. Ships deliver crude oil and transport refined products through channel terminals.
Houston Ship Channel chemical fire: A 2019 industrial fire at a petrochemical storage facility along the Houston Ship Channel. The incident illustrated the hazards of storing and handling flammable chemicals beside the waterway.
Mississippi River Ship Channel: The navigable route linking the Port of New Orleans and other river ports to the Gulf of Mexico. It serves a vast river system, unlike Houston's bayou-and-bay route.
