Hua Tuo

Hua Tuo was a physician of the late Eastern Han dynasty, traditionally credited with using surgery, anesthetic wine, and therapeutic exercises. His biography blends historical record with later legend.

Cao Cao: A military leader and statesman who became the de facto ruler of northern China near the end of the Han dynasty. Accounts say Cao Cao summoned Hua Tuo to treat his recurring headaches and later imprisoned him.
Mafeisan: A substance described in historical accounts as an anesthetic Hua Tuo administered before surgery. It is the medicine most closely associated with his reported surgical anesthesia.
Eastern Han dynasty: The later period of the Han dynasty in China, lasting from 25 to 220 CE. Hua Tuo’s life is placed near the dynasty’s end, amid political disorder and warfare.
Hua Tuo’s treatment of Cao Cao: A traditional account in which Hua Tuo proposed surgery to relieve Cao Cao’s recurring headaches. The episode links his reputation for bold treatment to the ruler’s suspicion and his reported imprisonment.
Chen Shou: A third-century historian who compiled Records of the Three Kingdoms. His biography of Hua Tuo is an early source for the physician’s life and reported practices.

Pei Songzhi: A fifth-century historian who annotated Records of the Three Kingdoms with additional sources and commentary. His annotations preserve further stories about Hua Tuo while also revealing the limits of the evidence.
Wuqinxi: A set of health exercises modeled on the movements of five animals and traditionally attributed to Hua Tuo. This exercise system is the clearest surviving practice linked to his therapeutic approach.
