Huang Chao Rebellion

A major uprising against the Tang dynasty from 874 to 884, led by Huang Chao. It captured the capital Chang’an and accelerated the dynasty’s collapse.

Huang Chao: A late Tang rebel leader who proclaimed himself emperor and led an uprising across northern and southern China. His campaigns and brief imperial claim gave the rebellion its leadership and political aim.
Salt monopoly: A state-controlled system for producing and selling salt, used by Chinese dynasties as a major source of revenue. Heavy taxation and illicit salt trading shaped the world in which Huang Chao made his living.
Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period: A period of political fragmentation in China from 907 to 979, following the fall of the Tang dynasty. The rebellion weakened Tang rule before the fragmentation that followed the dynasty’s fall.
Siege of Chang’an (881–883): The period in which Huang Chao’s forces occupied Chang’an before Tang and allied troops retook the capital. The occupation and recovery of the capital encapsulate the rebellion’s military peak and reversal.
Wang Xianzhi: A rebel leader whose uprising began in 874 and helped ignite the wider late Tang rebellion. His revolt preceded Huang Chao’s rise and drew many of the same disaffected followers.
Late Tang dynasty: The final period of Tang rule, marked by weakened central authority, military regionalism, and recurring rebellions. The uprising emerged amid the late Tang court’s declining capacity to govern and raise revenue.
Tang dynasty fall: The end of Tang rule in 907, when Zhu Wen deposed the last Tang emperor and founded the Later Liang. The rebellion did not end the Tang immediately, but helped create the conditions for its overthrow.
Battle of Langshan: A battle in 882 in which Tang forces defeated Huang Chao’s army near Langshan. The defeat weakened Huang Chao’s position during the campaign to recover Chang’an.
Chang’an: The capital of several Chinese dynasties, including the Tang, located in present-day Xi’an. Huang Chao’s capture of the Tang capital in 881 marked the rebellion’s high point.
Jiedushi: Regional military governors in imperial China who commanded armies and controlled provincial administration. Powerful regional commanders limited the central government’s ability to respond consistently to rebellion.
