Huang-Lao

Huang-Lao was a Han-era current of thought that combined Daoist ideas with techniques of rulership and administration. Its name joined the Yellow Emperor with Laozi, figures associated with its intellectual lineage.

Daoism: A Chinese philosophical and religious tradition centered on the Dao, the way underlying and guiding the world. Huang-Lao adapted Daoist ideas about the Dao and nonaction for governing.
Dao: The underlying way or order through which the world arises and changes in Chinese philosophy. Huang-Lao treated the Dao as a model and source of sound political order.
Qin dynasty: The Chinese dynasty that unified the warring states and ruled from 221 to 206 BCE. Qin’s centralized rule formed part of the political inheritance Huang-Lao thinkers addressed.
Emperor Wen of Han: A Han emperor who ruled from 180 to 157 BCE and was remembered for restrained government and frugality. His reign is often associated with the low-intervention policies admired by Huang-Lao advocates.
Laozi: A foundational figure in Chinese thought traditionally credited with the Daodejing. Huang-Lao drew on teachings associated with Laozi, especially the Dao and nonaction.
Yin and yang: A scheme of complementary forces used to explain patterns of change in the cosmos and human affairs. Huang-Lao used cosmic patterns to frame how rulers should respond to changing conditions.
Early Han dynasty: The first period of Han rule, beginning in 202 BCE and marked by the consolidation of imperial government. Huang-Lao gained political prominence as early Han rulers sought stability and effective administration.
Emperor Jing of Han: A Han emperor who ruled from 157 to 141 BCE and continued policies of consolidation and restraint. His reign extended the early Han political setting in which Huang-Lao remained influential.
Yellow Emperor: A legendary sovereign regarded in Chinese tradition as an ancestor and culture hero. His name linked Huang-Lao to an idealized tradition of ancient rulership.
Huang-Lao political thought: A strand of Huang-Lao teaching that applies Daoist and cosmological ideas to political rule. It brings the current’s theories of rulership into direct focus.
