Hubei

Hubei is a province in central China, centered on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Its capital and largest city is Wuhan.

Yangtze River: The longest river in Asia, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea. The river crosses Hubei and shapes its transport routes, settlements, and flood history.
Three Gorges Dam: A hydroelectric dam across the Yangtze River near Yichang in Hubei. The dam generates electricity, controls some flooding, and reshaped Hubei’s western river valley.
Chu (state): An ancient Chinese state that flourished in the middle Yangtze region during the Zhou dynasty. Much of present-day Hubei formed a core area of Chu, whose culture left lasting regional traces.
Shennongjia: A mountainous forest region and UNESCO World Heritage site in western Hubei. Its biodiversity and highland landscapes contrast with the province’s densely settled river plain.

Wuhan–Guangzhou high-speed railway: A high-speed rail line connecting Wuhan in Hubei with Guangzhou in Guangdong. It links Hubei’s capital to southern China and strengthens Wuhan’s role as a transport hub.
Hubei (historical province): A Qing-era province established in the early eighteenth century in central China. The modern province’s name and administrative lineage emerged from this earlier division.
Wudang Mountains: A mountain range in Hubei renowned for Taoist temples and martial arts traditions. The mountains are a major cultural landmark in Hubei’s northwest.
South–North Water Transfer Project: A Chinese infrastructure program that transfers water from the Yangtze basin toward northern China. Its central route diverts water from the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei.
