Hudson Bay drainage basin

The land area whose rivers and streams ultimately drain into Hudson Bay or James Bay. It spans much of central and northern Canada and parts of the United States.

Drainage basin: An area of land where precipitation drains toward a common outlet through rivers, streams, and groundwater. The basin is a vast example of this landform, defined by its shared outlet.
Nelson River drainage system: The network of rivers and lakes that drains through Lake Winnipeg and the Nelson River to Hudson Bay. It forms the basin’s largest connected inland route to the bay.
James Bay Project: A large hydroelectric development in northern Quebec centered on rivers draining into James Bay. Its dams and reservoirs substantially altered rivers within the basin.
Hudson Bay Lowland peatlands: Extensive peat-forming wetlands in the lowlands around Hudson Bay and James Bay. They store carbon and water across a substantial part of the basin’s coastal region.
Hudson Bay: A large inland sea in northeastern Canada connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the Hudson Strait. Its shores receive the basin’s rivers and mark much of the basin’s outlet.
Churchill River (Manitoba): A river in Manitoba that flows from Saskatchewan into Hudson Bay. It provides a separate major route carrying basin water directly to the bay.
Nelson River Hydroelectric Project: A network of dams and generating stations developed along Manitoba’s Nelson River. It harnesses the basin’s flow where water exits Lake Winnipeg toward Hudson Bay.
Beluga whale: A small Arctic and subarctic whale found in northern coastal waters and estuaries. Belugas use estuaries where basin rivers meet Hudson Bay.
James Bay: A southern extension of Hudson Bay between Ontario and Quebec. The basin also drains into this southern arm of Hudson Bay.
La Grande River: A major river in Quebec that flows eastward into James Bay. It drains a substantial part of the basin’s eastern side.
