Hugh Everett III

Hugh Everett III was an American physicist who formulated the relative-state interpretation of quantum mechanics, later called the many-worlds interpretation, and developed a theory of universal wavefunction dynamics.

Quantum mechanics: A physical theory describing matter and radiation through quantum states, probabilities, and measurement outcomes. Everett treated quantum mechanics as universally applicable, including to observers and measuring devices.
Relative-state formulation: Everett’s 1957 formulation in which states describe one system relative to the state of another. This was Everett’s original way to describe measurement without wave-function collapse.
John Archibald Wheeler: An American theoretical physicist whose work spanned general relativity, nuclear physics, and quantum foundations. Wheeler supervised Everett’s doctoral work and helped bring its central idea to publication.
Bryce DeWitt: An American theoretical physicist who helped develop and popularize the many-worlds interpretation. DeWitt gave Everett’s proposal its widely used many-worlds framing.
Many-worlds interpretation: An interpretation of quantum mechanics in which all outcomes occur in effectively separate branches of the universal state. This later name popularized the implications of Everett’s relative-state theory.
Schrödinger equation: A differential equation governing how a quantum state changes continuously over time. Its uninterrupted evolution is central to Everett’s account of measurement.
Universal wave function: The quantum state representing the entire universe as a single physical system. Everett applied quantum dynamics to the universe rather than imposing an external observer.
Princeton University: A private research university in Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1746. Everett developed his dissertation on quantum mechanics there under Wheeler’s supervision.
Charles Misner: An American theoretical physicist known for work in general relativity and gravitation. Misner was a Princeton contemporary who helped connect Everett’s work with later physics discussions.
Quantum foundations: The study of the conceptual and mathematical foundations of quantum theory. Everett’s work became a central proposal in debates over what quantum mechanics describes.
