Huineng

Huineng (638–713) is traditionally regarded as the sixth patriarch of Chan Buddhism and a founder of its Southern School. His teachings are presented in the Platform Sutra.

Chan Buddhism: A Chinese Buddhist tradition emphasizing meditation, awakening, and teacher-to-student transmission. Huineng became a defining patriarch of this tradition and its Southern School.
Platform Sutra: A Chinese Buddhist scripture presenting teachings and episodes associated with Huineng. It is the principal textual source for Huineng’s teachings and legendary biography.
Sudden enlightenment: The view that awakening can occur directly and completely rather than only through gradual stages. The Platform Sutra presents sudden awakening as central to Huineng’s teaching.
Southern School of Chan: The Chan lineage later associated with Huineng and the teaching of sudden awakening. Huineng became its emblematic patriarch in accounts of Chan’s historical development.
Bodhi: In Buddhism, awakening is liberation from ignorance and insight into the nature of reality. Huineng’s teaching centers on realizing awakening directly rather than attaining it gradually.
Hongren: The fifth patriarch of Chan Buddhism and a teacher associated with the East Mountain tradition. Huineng’s account presents Hongren as the teacher who recognized and transmitted his insight.
Non-abiding: A Buddhist principle of not fixing the mind on thoughts, objects, or views. Huineng’s instruction to let the mind function without attachment is expressed through this principle.
Northern School of Chan: A label used in later Chan histories for a lineage associated with Shenxiu and gradual cultivation. Its contrast with Huineng’s Southern School framed a major debate over awakening and practice.
Buddha-nature: The Mahayana Buddhist idea that beings possess, or are grounded in, the capacity for Buddhahood. The Platform Sutra links innate capacity for awakening with Huineng’s account of mind.
Shenhui: An eighth-century Chan monk who promoted Huineng as the true sixth patriarch. His advocacy helped establish Huineng’s lineage and the Southern School’s historical prominence.
