Hull House

Hull House was a Chicago settlement house founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr. It combined neighborhood services, education, research, and political advocacy in immigrant communities.

Settlement movement: A reform movement in which middle-class residents established community centers in poor urban neighborhoods. Hull House became one of the best-known American centers of this movement.
Jane Addams: An American social reformer, settlement-house leader, and co-founder of Hull House. Addams led Hull House for decades and became its most prominent public advocate.
Toynbee Hall: A settlement house founded in London's East End in 1884 by Samuel and Henrietta Barnett. Addams and Starr modeled Hull House partly on this London settlement.
Hull-House Maps and Papers: A 1895 collection of studies documenting social and economic conditions in Chicago's immigrant neighborhoods. Its maps and essays made neighborhood conditions visible through systematic investigation.
Henry Street Settlement: A New York settlement house founded by Lillian Wald in 1893, known for its public-health nursing work. It pursued settlement reform through nursing and health services rather than Hull House's broad program.
Kindergarten: An early-childhood educational program emphasizing play, social development, and guided learning. Hull House offered kindergarten classes for neighborhood children.
Ellen Gates Starr: An American social reformer and educator who co-founded Hull House with Jane Addams. Starr helped establish the institution and developed its arts and educational work.
Jane Addams's Twenty Years at Hull-House: Jane Addams's 1910 memoir recounting the origins and development of Hull House. Addams's account describes the decisions and experiences behind the house's founding.
Illinois Factory Act of 1893: An Illinois law that regulated factory conditions and restricted women's and children's working hours. Investigations by Hull House reformers helped support the campaign for this law.
University Settlement: A settlement house founded in New York City's Lower East Side in 1886 by university graduates. Its earlier founding provides a comparison for Hull House's Chicago model and origins.
