Human Development Index

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic that summarizes a country’s achievements in health, education, and standard of living using life expectancy, schooling, and income measures.

Life Expectancy Index: A normalized measure of life expectancy at birth used as the HDI’s health dimension. It converts longevity into the health component of the composite.
Mahbub ul Haq: A Pakistani economist who led the creation of the Human Development Reports and the HDI. His framework turned human development into a public alternative to income-only rankings.
Human Development Report Office: The United Nations Development Programme office responsible for producing the Human Development Reports. It calculates and publishes official HDI values and country rankings.
Gender Development Index: A UNDP measure comparing female and male HDI values within a country. It tests whether overall human development is shared similarly across genders.
Education Index: An HDI dimension combining mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling. It represents both educational attainment and the schooling prospects of children.
Amartya Sen: An Indian economist and philosopher whose capability approach evaluates development through people’s substantive freedoms. His ideas shaped the HDI’s focus on human lives rather than output alone.
Human Development Index by Country: A country-level presentation of HDI values and rankings for a specified reporting year. Country comparisons are the index’s most visible use.
Gender Inequality Index: A UNDP composite measure of gender-based disadvantage in reproductive health, empowerment, and labor participation. It captures gender disparities that the standard HDI does not represent.
Gross National Income per Capita: A country’s total income accruing to residents, divided by its population. The HDI uses income per person to represent command over material resources.
United Nations Development Programme: A United Nations agency that supports development and publishes the Human Development Reports. The agency introduced the index in its 1990 Human Development Report.
