Human dignity

Human dignity is the inherent worth attributed to every person, often treated as a foundation for equal rights and protection from degrading treatment.

Immanuel Kant: An eighteenth-century philosopher who grounded moral duties in rational agency and the requirement to treat persons as ends. Kant’s account ties dignity to rational agency and forbids using people merely as means.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights: A 1948 United Nations declaration setting out a universal catalogue of human rights. Its preamble identifies inherent dignity as the basis of freedom, justice, and peace.
Autonomy: The capacity or right to make decisions and govern oneself without undue control by others. Some accounts treat respect for dignity chiefly as respect for a person’s choices.
Dignity in law: The use of human dignity as a legal principle in constitutions, statutes, and court decisions. Courts disagree over whether dignity supplies a clear rule or an open-ended standard.
Imago Dei: A theological idea that human beings bear the image of God, grounding distinctive human worth. This religious account grounds dignity in humanity’s relation to God rather than in achievement or status.
Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany: Germany’s constitution, adopted in 1949, whose first article declares human dignity inviolable. It gives dignity unusually prominent constitutional force and binds state authority to respect and protect it.
Paternalism: Interference with a person’s choices justified by claims about that person’s welfare. Dignity can be invoked both to protect self-determination and to defend protective restrictions.
Dignity in dying: Ethical and legal debate about preserving dignity near death, including decisions about assisted dying and end-of-life care. The phrase can support conflicting claims about personal choice and protection of vulnerable people.
Personhood: The status or qualities by which an entity is recognized as a person, often carrying moral or legal significance. Accounts of dignity often depend on what makes someone a person and whether that status admits degrees.
European Convention on Human Rights: A 1950 international treaty protecting rights and freedoms in Council of Europe member states. Its protections against torture and degrading treatment give legal form to dignity-related claims.
