Knowra Human food Human food Human food consists of edible substances people consume for energy, nutrients, and other physiological needs. It includes ingredients and prepared dishes from plant, animal, and microbial sources.
Macronutrient : A nutrient required in relatively large amounts, including carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These nutrients supply most dietary energy and much of the material needed for growth.
Diet : The pattern of foods and drinks a person regularly consumes. A collection of foods becomes nutritionally meaningful through its overall pattern.
Hunter-gatherer : A person or society that obtains food by hunting animals and gathering wild plants. For most of human history, food came largely from wild sources.
Nutrition : The study of how organisms obtain and use nutrients from food. Nutrition examines how food’s contents support or affect bodily function.
Dietary supplement : A product taken to supplement the diet with nutrients or other substances, often in concentrated form. Supplements deliver selected dietary components without functioning as ordinary meals.
Micronutrient : A nutrient required in small amounts, such as a vitamin or mineral. Foods provide these compounds even though they contribute little or no energy.
Food processing : Methods used to transform food, including cooking, fermentation, freezing, and drying. Processing changes food’s safety, shelf life, texture, and nutritional properties.
Agricultural Revolution : The transition in several regions from foraging to cultivating crops and raising domesticated animals. Domestication transformed how food was produced and made settled communities possible.
Agriculture : The cultivation of plants and raising of animals for food, materials, and other products. Agriculture produces much of the food consumed by people.
