Human voice

Sound produced as airflow sets the vocal folds in the larynx vibrating, then shaped by the vocal tract. It supports speech, singing, and other vocal expression.

Vocal folds: Paired flexible tissues in the larynx that vibrate as air passes through them. Their vibration supplies the voiced sound that the rest of the vocal system shapes.
Fundamental frequency: The lowest frequency of a periodic sound, corresponding to its repetition rate. It is the acoustic correlate of vocal-fold vibration rate and strongly shapes perceived pitch.
Speech: The production and perception of linguistic sounds through the vocal and articulatory system. Voice supplies voiced sounds that speech combines with articulation into spoken language.
Whispering: A mode of speech produced without regular vocal-fold vibration, using turbulent airflow instead. Whispering remains vocal communication but lacks the usual voiced sound source.
Voice disorder: A condition that disrupts vocal quality, pitch, loudness, or effort. Disorders reveal how changes to vocal-fold function or vocal-tract use affect communication.
Larynx: A structure in the neck that houses the vocal folds and connects the pharynx to the trachea. It contains the sound source and regulates airflow through the vocal folds.
Pitch: The perceptual quality by which sounds are ordered from low to high. Listeners hear changes in vocal fundamental frequency chiefly as changes in pitch.
Singing: The musical use of the human voice to produce organized pitches and rhythms. Singing exploits vocal pitch, sustained phonation, and deliberate changes in timbre.
Vocal fry: A low-frequency phonation pattern marked by irregular, often widely spaced vocal-fold pulses. It is a distinct vocal-fold vibration pattern that can occur at the low end of speaking pitch.
Voice therapy: Behavioral treatment that develops more effective or less effortful voice production. It applies training and vocal exercises to improve function or reduce vocal strain.
