Humayun

Humayun was the second Mughal emperor, ruling from 1530 to 1540 and again from 1555 until his death in 1556. Sher Shah Suri drove him into exile, but Persian support helped him recover the throne.

Babur: Babur was the founder of the Mughal Empire in India and Humayun’s father. Babur’s death in 1530 placed Humayun on a contested throne.
Sher Shah Suri: Sher Shah Suri was an Afghan ruler who defeated Humayun and founded the Sur Empire in northern India. His victories forced Humayun from India and interrupted Mughal rule.
Akbar: Akbar was the third Mughal emperor, who succeeded Humayun in 1556 and greatly expanded the empire. Humayun’s death left the young Akbar’s succession dependent on loyal commanders.
Second Battle of Panipat: The Second Battle of Panipat in 1556 was Akbar’s victory over Hemu, which secured early Mughal rule after Humayun’s death. The battle consolidated the empire Humayun had briefly restored.
Mughal Empire: The Mughal Empire was a South Asian empire founded by Babur in 1526 and ruled by his dynasty until the nineteenth century. Humayun inherited this empire and later restored its rule in northern India.
Battle of Chausa: The Battle of Chausa in 1539 was Sher Shah Suri’s victory over Humayun near the Ganges. The defeat shattered Humayun’s position before his final expulsion.
Gulbadan Begum: Gulbadan Begum was a Mughal princess and daughter of Babur who wrote the Humayun-nama. Her memoir is a rare account of Humayun’s family and court.
Humayun's Tomb: Humayun’s Tomb is a monumental Mughal mausoleum in Delhi, commissioned by his widow and completed in the sixteenth century. Its design became a major precedent for later Mughal imperial architecture.
Battle of Panipat (1526): The Battle of Panipat in 1526 ended Ibrahim Lodi’s rule and established Babur’s power in northern India. Babur’s victory created the new dynasty Humayun inherited.
Battle of Kannauj: The Battle of Kannauj in 1540 was Sher Shah Suri’s decisive victory over Humayun. Its loss ended Humayun’s first reign and began his exile.
