A model of higher education that unites research with teaching and emphasizes academic freedom, treating knowledge as continually developed rather than merely transmitted.

Unity of teaching and research: The principle that university teaching and scholarly research should inform and strengthen one another. This is the model’s defining link between educating students and producing knowledge.
University of Berlin: A university founded in Berlin in 1810, later known as Humboldt University of Berlin. Its founding put the emerging model into institutional practice.
