Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin

The late ninth-century migration and settlement of Magyar groups in the Carpathian Basin, establishing the territorial base of medieval Hungary.

Árpád: A Magyar leader traditionally associated with the conquest of the Carpathian Basin and the Árpád dynasty. Later tradition places him at the head of the Magyar leadership during the settlement.
Etelköz: The region between the Dnieper and lower Danube where Magyar groups lived before entering the Carpathian Basin. It was the Magyars’ immediate staging area before their westward migration.
Álmos: A Magyar leader in medieval tradition, regarded as the father of Árpád and an ancestor of the ruling dynasty. Tradition associates him with the generation that led the Magyars toward the basin.
Magyars: A people whose descendants form the principal ethnic group of Hungary and who spoke an Uralic language. The conquest was the migration and settlement of Magyar groups, not a single unified campaign.
Principality of Hungary: The early medieval Magyar polity in the Carpathian Basin before the establishment of the Kingdom of Hungary. It was the political formation that emerged from the settlement.
Battle of Bratislava: A 907 battle in which East Frankish forces suffered a major defeat against Magyar forces. The victory helped secure Magyar control of the western approaches to the basin.
Levedia: A region east of the Dnieper associated in medieval accounts with an earlier Magyar homeland. Accounts of Levedia place an earlier stage of Magyar migration before Etelköz.
Constantine VII: A Byzantine emperor and scholar who ruled from 913 to 959 and wrote about neighboring peoples and imperial governance. His account of the Magyars preserves evidence about their leadership and earlier history.
Hungarian language: A Uralic language spoken chiefly in Hungary and by Hungarian communities elsewhere. Its linguistic history helps distinguish Magyar origins from neighboring Slavic and Turkic peoples.
Kingdom of Hungary: The medieval Christian kingdom founded around the turn of the eleventh century under the Árpád dynasty. It developed from the Magyar polity established in the basin.
