Hungarian Dances

A set of 21 dances arranged by Johannes Brahms, mostly drawing on Hungarian and Roma melodies. First published for piano four hands, the collection later appeared in orchestral arrangements.

Johannes Brahms: A German composer and pianist of the Romantic period, known for symphonies, chamber music, and piano works. He selected and arranged the melodies that became the collection.
Hungarian Revolution of 1848: A nationalist uprising in the Kingdom of Hungary against Habsburg rule, beginning in 1848. Its aftermath helped shape the Hungarian musical culture encountered by Brahms.
Hungarian Dance No. 1: The first dance in Brahms’s collection, known in both piano and orchestral versions. Its orchestral arrangement shows how the collection’s sound changes beyond the keyboard.
Brahms–Joachim Variations: A set of orchestral variations by Brahms on a theme by the violinist Joseph Joachim. Unlike the Hungarian Dances, these variations clearly identify their borrowed theme and composer.
Roma music: Music associated with Roma communities, encompassing varied traditions across Europe and beyond. Roma musical styles shaped many melodies Brahms adapted.
Eduard Reményi: A Hungarian violinist who toured with Brahms in the early 1850s. His performances introduced Brahms to melodies and styles later reflected in the dances.
Hungarian Dance No. 6: A dance from Brahms’s collection, arranged for orchestra by the composer. Its orchestral color makes a useful comparison with the four-hand original.
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2: A solo piano work by Franz Liszt, drawing on Hungarian musical styles and dance idioms. Liszt’s virtuosic original composition offers a contrasting approach to Hungarian-inspired music.
Csárdás: A Hungarian dance form that typically shifts from a slow section to a fast one. Its contrasting tempos and dance character illuminate the collection’s style.
Magyar nóta: A Hungarian popular song tradition associated especially with urban music-making in the nineteenth century. Some source material belongs to the popular repertory Brahms encountered.
