Hungarian Revolution of 1848

A liberal and national uprising in the Kingdom of Hungary against Habsburg rule, followed by a war of independence suppressed by Austrian and Russian forces.

Twelve Points: A program of political and civil reforms issued by Hungarian revolutionaries in March 1848. Its demands gave the uprising a concise platform for constitutional change.
Hungarian Reform Era: A period of political, economic, and cultural reform in Hungary from the 1820s to 1848. Its reformers built the program and political networks that preceded revolution.
Lajos Batthyány: The first prime minister of Hungary’s responsible government in 1848. His government tried to preserve Hungarian autonomy through constitutional negotiation.
Execution of the Martyrs of Arad: The execution of thirteen Hungarian generals by Austrian authorities on 6 October 1849. The executions made the suppression a lasting national memory of sacrifice.
Lajos Kossuth: A Hungarian statesman who led the independence movement and governed during the revolution. His speeches and political leadership helped turn reform into a struggle for sovereignty.
Diet of Hungary: The representative assembly of the Kingdom of Hungary, historically composed of nobles and clergy. The 1847–48 Diet enacted major reforms before conflict with Vienna escalated.
Sándor Petőfi: A Hungarian poet and revolutionary who became a symbol of the 1848 uprising. His poem “National Song” became an emblem of the March revolution.
Bach System: The centralized, German-led administration imposed in the Austrian Empire during the 1850s. It replaced Hungary’s revolutionary institutions with direct imperial control.
Hungarian National Guard: A volunteer force established in 1848 to maintain order and defend Hungary. It gave the new revolutionary government an initial organized military force.
March Laws: A package of Hungarian laws passed in March 1848 that established constitutional government and ended feudal privileges. They converted revolutionary demands into legislation, while leaving sovereignty contested.
