Hunter-gatherer

A person or society that obtains food by hunting wild animals, fishing, and gathering naturally growing plants rather than farming or herding.

Foraging: The search for and collection of naturally available food and other resources. Hunter-gathering is a form of foraging based on wild foods.
Persistence hunting: A hunting technique in which people pursue prey until heat and exhaustion impair its escape. It illustrates one way human endurance can turn into a hunting strategy.
Paleolithic: The prehistoric period characterized by stone tools, beginning with early toolmaking and ending at different times across regions. Much of the archaeological record of hunter-gatherers belongs to this broad period.
Agriculture: The cultivation of plants and raising of animals to produce food, fiber, and other useful materials. Cultivating crops differs from obtaining naturally growing foods.
San people: Indigenous peoples of southern Africa, including communities with long histories of hunting and gathering. San histories illustrate foraging knowledge and lifeways in varied southern African environments.
Subsistence economy: An economic system in which people produce or obtain mainly what they need to live. Food gathering and hunting directly supply the necessities of life.
Projectile weapon: A weapon that launches a projectile toward a target, including bows, spears, and throwing devices. Projectile weapons extend hunting range and reduce the need for close contact.
Oldowan: An early stone-tool industry known for simple flakes and cores, dating back more than two million years. Its tools document early hominin resource processing and adaptation.
Pastoralism: A livelihood centered on herding domesticated animals for food and other resources. Herding depends on managed livestock rather than primarily wild foods.
Hadza people: An Indigenous people of Tanzania whose livelihoods have included hunting and gathering. Hadza communities are often studied in discussions of contemporary foraging.
