Hurrians

The Hurrians were an ancient Near Eastern people who spoke Hurrian and established the kingdom of Mitanni in northern Mesopotamia and Syria.

Hurrian language: An extinct language of the ancient Near East, unrelated to the Indo-European and Semitic language families. It is the clearest marker of Hurrian identity, preserved in texts across the region.
Akkadian language: An East Semitic language used widely in ancient Mesopotamia and the Near East. Akkadian served as a diplomatic and administrative language in Hurrian-led Mitanni.
Tushratta: A fourteenth-century BCE king of Mitanni who corresponded with Egypt's pharaoh Akhenaten. His letters provide unusually direct evidence for Mitanni's royal world.
Hurrian religion: The religious traditions of Hurrian-speaking communities, including worship of Teshub, Hebat, and Shaushka. Its gods and rituals shaped Hurrian identity and influenced neighboring courts.
Hittite–Mitanni wars: A series of conflicts in the fifteenth and fourteenth centuries BCE between the Hittite kingdom and Mitanni. Hittite expansion helped weaken the Hurrian-led kingdom and reshape northern Syria.
Mitanni: A Hurrian-led kingdom that controlled parts of northern Mesopotamia and Syria during the second millennium BCE. It was the major state built by Hurrian-speaking elites.
Cuneiform: A writing system made by pressing wedge-shaped marks into clay or other materials. Most surviving written evidence for Hurrian comes from cuneiform tablets.
Artashumara: A Mitanni king whose brief reign preceded that of his brother Tushratta. His contested succession illustrates dynastic instability in late Mitanni.
Kumarbi Cycle: A group of Hurrian mythological narratives about the god Kumarbi and the succession of divine rulers. These myths preserve a distinctive Hurrian account of divine conflict and kingship.
Egyptian–Mitanni relations: Diplomatic relations between Egypt and Mitanni, including treaties and royal marriages in the second millennium BCE. These ties show Mitanni's standing among the major powers of the age.
