Husayn ibn Ali

Husayn ibn Ali was the grandson of Muhammad and a leader of the Prophet’s family. He was killed at Karbala in 680 and is revered as a martyr, especially in Shia Islam.

Ali ibn Abi Talib: Ali ibn Abi Talib was Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, the fourth caliph, and the first imam in Shia Islam. Husayn was Ali’s son, and Ali’s caliphate became central to later disputes over leadership.
Battle of Karbala: The Battle of Karbala was the 680 confrontation in which Husayn and his small group were killed by Umayyad forces. It is the event in which Husayn was killed and the defining episode of his life.

Imamate: In Shia Islam, the Imamate is the divinely guided leadership of the community through a line of imams descended from Muhammad. Husayn is revered as the third imam in Twelver Shia Islam.
Mukhtar al-Thaqafi: Mukhtar al-Thaqafi was a revolutionary who led a revolt in Kufa from 685 to 687, claiming to avenge Husayn’s death. His movement turned demands for vengeance for Karbala into an armed uprising.
Hasan ibn Ali: Hasan ibn Ali was the elder son of Ali and Fatima and the second Shia imam. Husayn’s brother made a truce with Muawiya before Husayn’s later confrontation with Yazid.
Arba'een: Arba'een is the observance held forty days after Ashura, associated especially with pilgrimage to Husayn’s shrine. Its annual pilgrimage extends remembrance of Husayn beyond the day of his death.
