Hyalin (pathology)

Hyalin is a glassy, homogeneous material seen in tissue sections, usually composed of proteins. It describes an appearance shared by deposits and degenerative changes, not one chemically uniform substance.

Hyalinosis: A tissue change marked by accumulation of glassy, homogeneous material. The term names the process or pattern in which hyalin accumulates.
Arteriolar hyalinosis: Hyaline thickening of small-artery walls, commonly associated with hypertension and diabetes. It is a classic example of hyalin within vessel walls.
Fibrinoid necrosis: A vessel-wall injury pattern in which immune complexes and fibrin create intensely eosinophilic material. It can resemble hyalin microscopically, but signals a different form of vascular damage.
Renal biopsy: Microscopic examination of kidney tissue obtained by biopsy to diagnose renal disease. Hyaline droplets and vascular deposits are interpreted alongside glomerular and tubular findings.
Histopathology: The microscopic study of diseased tissues and the structural changes associated with disease. Hyalin is a descriptive observation interpreted within tissue architecture and clinical context.
Hematoxylin and eosin stain: A routine tissue stain that colors nuclei blue-purple and many proteins pink. Hyalin is commonly recognized by its smooth, eosinophilic appearance on this stain.
Hyaline arteriolosclerosis: Small-vessel wall thickening caused by plasma-protein leakage and increased extracellular matrix. This named vascular lesion describes a major pattern of hyalin deposition.
Fibrin: An insoluble protein formed from fibrinogen during blood clotting. Fibrin may contribute to some deposits but is chemically more specific than hyalin.
Diabetic nephropathy: Kidney damage caused by diabetes, including glomerular and small-vessel lesions. Hyaline arteriolar changes are common in diabetic kidneys.
Morphology (biology): The study or description of the form and structure of organisms and their parts. Calling material hyalin reports its appearance rather than establishing its exact chemistry.
