Hydraulic conductivity

Hydraulic conductivity measures how readily a porous material transmits water under a hydraulic gradient. It depends on both the material’s pore structure and the fluid’s properties.

Darcy's law: A relation connecting fluid discharge through a porous medium to hydraulic gradient, cross-sectional area, and hydraulic conductivity. It uses hydraulic conductivity to quantify flow through porous material.
Hydraulic head: The mechanical energy per unit weight of water, commonly expressed as an elevation. Differences in head provide the energy gradient associated with flow.
Aquifer: A permeable geological formation that stores and transmits groundwater. Aquifer conductivity controls how readily wells and springs can draw water from it.
Transmissivity: The rate at which a saturated aquifer transmits water through a unit width, integrating conductivity over thickness. Unlike conductivity, transmissivity includes the aquifer’s saturated thickness.
Intrinsic permeability: A measure of a porous material’s ability to transmit fluid, independent of the fluid’s properties. It separates pore-structure effects from viscosity and density, which hydraulic conductivity includes.
Porosity: The fraction of a material’s bulk volume occupied by voids. Porosity sets the available pore space, though it alone does not determine conductivity.
Slug test: An aquifer test that infers hydraulic properties from the recovery of water level after a sudden change. Its recovery curve can be used to estimate conductivity near a well.
Specific discharge: The volumetric flow rate through a porous medium divided by its total cross-sectional area. It describes flow per area; conductivity relates that flow to the hydraulic gradient.
Pore-scale flow: Fluid movement through the connected pores and throats of a porous material. The arrangement and size of these pathways govern conductivity at larger scales.
Pore-size distribution: The range and relative abundance of pore sizes within a porous material. Pore sizes shape connected flow pathways and strongly influence conductivity.
