Hydrodynamics studies liquids in motion and the forces they exert. It describes flows ranging from steady currents to turbulence and waves.

Navier–Stokes equations: A system of partial differential equations describing the motion of viscous fluids. They express how pressure, viscosity, and external forces govern liquid flow.
Fluid statics: The study of fluids at rest and the pressures they exert. It isolates pressure and buoyancy before motion is introduced.
Aerodynamics: The study of air motion and the forces air exerts on objects. It applies related flow principles to gases rather than liquids.
Hydraulics: The applied study of liquids at rest and in motion, especially in engineering systems. It emphasizes practical water systems, while hydrodynamics develops general flow descriptions.
Continuity equation: An equation expressing conservation of mass in a flowing medium. It links changes in liquid speed and density to the geometry of a flow.
Pressure: Normal force exerted per unit area by a fluid or other material. Pressure differences drive many liquid flows and transmit forces through liquids.
Naval architecture: The design of ships and other marine vessels, including their stability and performance. Hull resistance and maneuvering depend on the liquid flow around a vessel.
Fluid mechanics: The study of fluids at rest and in motion, including liquids and gases. Hydrodynamics is the liquid-focused branch of this broader discipline.
Reynolds number: A dimensionless ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces in fluid flow. It helps predict whether a liquid flow is laminar or turbulent.
Viscosity: A measure of a fluid's resistance to deformation and internal flow. It determines how strongly neighboring layers of liquid resist sliding.
