Hydrothermal circulation

Hydrothermal circulation is the movement of water through heated rock, driven by temperature and pressure differences. It transports heat and dissolved chemicals through Earth’s crust.

Hydrothermal convection: Fluid circulation driven by temperature-dependent density differences in a heated region. Buoyancy from heating is a major force driving water through hot rock.
Mid-ocean ridge: A long underwater mountain chain formed where tectonic plates move apart and new oceanic crust forms. Newly formed hot crust drives vigorous circulation beneath ridge crests.
Buoyancy: The upward force on an object or fluid caused by displacement of surrounding material. Heated water becomes buoyant relative to cooler surrounding water.
Hydrothermal system: A geological system in which heated water circulates through rock and exchanges heat and chemicals. The system includes circulation, heat sources, fluid pathways, and discharge zones.
Darcy's law: A relation describing fluid flow through porous material as a function of pressure gradient, permeability, and viscosity. It quantifies how pressure differences move water through permeable rock.
Black smoker: A seafloor hydrothermal vent that emits dark, particle-rich fluid, commonly rich in metal sulfides. It is a conspicuous product of hot circulation through oceanic crust.
Thermal expansion: The increase in a material’s volume as its temperature rises. Expansion contributes to density differences that help drive fluid flow.
Groundwater flow: The movement of water through saturated soil and rock, driven chiefly by hydraulic gradients. It can occur without the strong heating that defines hydrothermal circulation.
Permeability: A measure of how readily a material transmits fluid through connected pores or fractures. Connected pathways determine where circulating water can pass.
Geothermal energy: Usable heat extracted from Earth for electricity generation or direct heating. Engineered systems harness heat carried by fluids in hot rock.
