Hydrothermal vent

An opening in Earth’s seafloor that releases geothermally heated, mineral-rich water into the ocean. Its fluids and surrounding microbial communities support ecosystems without sunlight.

Hydrothermal circulation: The movement of water through hot, permeable rock, where heating and chemical reactions alter its composition. Seawater circulates through crust beneath vents before returning to the ocean.
Chemosynthesis: The production of organic matter using energy from chemical reactions rather than sunlight. Vent microbes use chemical energy to build the biomass supporting local food webs.
East Pacific Rise: A fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge extending through the eastern Pacific Ocean. Its well-studied vents include sites where giant tubeworm communities were discovered.
HMS Challenger expedition: A global oceanographic expedition conducted from 1872 to 1876 aboard the British vessel HMS Challenger. Its soundings and seafloor surveys helped establish the scientific exploration of the deep ocean.
Hydrothermal vent ecosystem: A deep-sea community sustained by chemical energy and materials released by hydrothermal activity. Vents support dense, specialized communities unlike most ecosystems dependent on photosynthesis.
Seafloor spreading: The process by which tectonic plates move apart and new oceanic crust forms between them. Ridges create fractures and heat sources that help drive vent circulation.
Hydrothermal vent microbial communities: Microorganisms living in vent fluids, deposits, and surrounding seafloor habitats. They transform vent chemicals into energy and shape the surrounding ecosystem.
Mid-Atlantic Ridge: A mostly underwater mountain chain marking a divergent plate boundary in the Atlantic Ocean. Its vents include the Lost City field, driven by water-rock reactions.
Alvin (DSV): A crewed deep-ocean research submersible operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Alvin enabled direct observation and sampling of the first discovered vent ecosystems.
Endemism: The ecological condition in which a species is native to and restricted to a particular geographic area. Many vent species occur only in particular regions or geological settings.
