Hymenium

The fertile tissue layer of a fungus where spore-producing cells develop. In mushrooms, it lines structures such as gills, pores, or teeth.

Basidium: A club-shaped fungal cell that produces spores, usually externally. Basidia are the main spore-producing cells in the hymenium of many mushrooms.
Gills: Thin blade-like structures beneath a mushroom cap that bear a spore-producing surface. Their two faces provide extensive surfaces for a hymenium beneath the cap.
Agaricus bisporus: The cultivated mushroom species commonly sold as button, cremini, or portobello mushrooms. Its familiar gills darken as the hymenium matures and produces spores.
Pileipellis: The outermost tissue layer covering the cap of a mushroom. Unlike the hymenium, this cap covering is not the spore-producing surface.
Elias Magnus Fries: A Swedish mycologist whose work helped establish modern fungal classification. Fries’s systematic descriptions helped standardize terminology for mushroom structures.
Ascus: A saclike cell in which ascomycete fungi form spores, usually internally. Some fungi form hymenia containing asci rather than basidia.
Pore surface: A spore-bearing surface made of the openings of tubes beneath a mushroom cap. The hymenium lines the tubes and pores rather than exposed blades.
Boletus edulis: An edible bolete mushroom known as porcini or king bolete. Its hymenium lines tubes that open as pores beneath the cap.
Trama: The internal flesh of a mushroom, including tissue within its cap or gills. Trama supports the hymenium but is generally not its fertile surface.
Mycology: The branch of biology concerned with fungi. The hymenium is a central anatomical term in fungal study and classification.
