Knowra Hyperactivity Hyperactivity Hyperactivity is excessive movement, restlessness, or difficulty remaining still. It is one of the symptom dimensions associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder : A neurodevelopmental disorder involving persistent inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that impairs functioning. Hyperactivity is one symptom dimension used to describe and diagnose ADHD.
ADHD diagnostic criteria : The symptom, duration, onset, and impairment requirements used to diagnose attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. These criteria distinguish clinically significant hyperactivity from occasional restlessness.
Behavior rating scale : A structured questionnaire used to record and compare observed behaviors or symptoms. Rating scales help collect reports of hyperactive behavior across settings.
Inattention : Difficulty sustaining attention, organizing tasks, or following through on activities. Inattention is a separate ADHD symptom dimension that may occur with or without hyperactivity.
Academic achievement : The extent to which a person attains educational goals and demonstrates learning. Excessive movement or difficulty waiting can disrupt classroom participation and task completion.
Impulsivity : A tendency to act quickly without adequately considering consequences or delaying responses. Hyperactivity and impulsivity often occur together as the ADHD hyperactive-impulsive symptom dimension.
Restlessness : A state of unease or difficulty remaining still, often accompanied by a desire to move. Restlessness is a common everyday description of hyperactivity, but does not by itself establish a disorder.
Continuous performance test : A computerized task measuring sustained attention and response patterns over time. These tests may assess related attention and impulse-control processes, but do not diagnose hyperactivity alone.
Anxiety disorder : A group of mental disorders marked by excessive fear, worry, or related behavioral disturbance. Anxiety-related agitation can look like hyperactivity but may have different triggers and treatment needs.
Peer relationships : Social connections among people of similar age or status. Interrupting, intruding, or difficulty staying within group routines can strain peer interactions.
