Hyperopia

Hyperopia is a refractive condition in which light from an object tends to focus behind the retina, especially during near viewing. Accommodation can compensate for some or all of the focusing error.

Accommodation: The eye’s adjustment of lens shape to focus objects at different distances on the retina. Accommodation can compensate for hyperopia by adding optical power, particularly in younger eyes.
Cycloplegic refraction: An eye examination that measures refractive error after drops temporarily relax accommodation. Relaxing accommodation can reveal hyperopia that ordinary refraction underestimates.
Myopia: A refractive condition in which distant images tend to focus in front of the retina. Myopia places the uncorrected focus in front of the retina, opposite hyperopia’s typical direction.
Accommodative esotropia: An inward eye deviation driven by the focusing effort used to overcome hyperopia. In some children, accommodation for hyperopia triggers excess convergence and inward turning.
Refractive error: A mismatch between the eye’s optical power and its length that prevents sharp retinal focus without correction. Hyperopia is one type of refractive error, alongside myopia and astigmatism.
Retinoscopy: An objective method of estimating refractive error by observing light reflected from the retina. It helps measure hyperopia, including in patients who cannot reliably report subjective blur.
Astigmatism: A refractive condition in which unequal optical power across meridians produces different focal positions. Astigmatism arises from direction-dependent focusing, rather than hyperopia’s overall insufficient converging power.
Amblyopia: Reduced visual development in one or both eyes that is not explained solely by structural disease. Uncorrected, substantial hyperopia can blur developing vision and contribute to amblyopia.
Axial length: The distance from the front of the cornea to the retina along the eye’s optical axis. An eye that is too short for its optical power tends to focus images behind the retina.
Plus lens: A converging lens that adds positive optical power and brings an image focus forward. A plus lens compensates for hyperopia by shifting focus toward the retina.
