Knowra Hypersexuality Hypersexuality Hypersexuality is a pattern of unusually intense or frequent sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviors that causes distress or impairs functioning. It is not defined by sexual frequency alone.
Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder : A disorder involving persistent failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges, resulting in repetitive behavior and significant impairment. The ICD-11 diagnosis most directly associated with persistent loss of control over sexual behavior.
High sexual desire : A strong or frequent interest in sexual activity that does not necessarily involve impaired control or harm. Frequent desire without distress or impairment is not, by itself, a disorder.
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders : A manual published by the American Psychiatric Association that classifies mental disorders and provides diagnostic criteria. Unlike ICD-11, DSM-5-TR does not include a diagnosis called hypersexuality or compulsive sexual behavior disorder.
Sex addiction : A popular but nonuniform label for perceived loss of control over sexual behavior; it is not a formal DSM-5-TR diagnosis. The addiction framing remains debated, while ICD-11 uses the diagnosis compulsive sexual behavior disorder.
Sexual desire : Motivation or interest in sexual activity, varying across people and over time. High desire alone does not establish distress, impaired control, or functional impairment.
Mania : A period of abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood with increased energy and other characteristic symptoms. Increased sexual activity can occur during mania as one part of a broader mood episode.
ICD-11 : The World Health Organization's international classification of diseases, in its eleventh revision. It provides the current formal diagnostic category of compulsive sexual behavior disorder.
Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder Scale : A questionnaire developed to measure features associated with compulsive sexual behavior disorder. Measurement tools can support research, but they do not replace clinical assessment or settle diagnostic boundaries.
Impulse-control disorder : A psychiatric diagnostic grouping involving persistent difficulty resisting impulses that lead to harmful or disruptive actions. ICD-11 classifies compulsive sexual behavior disorder among disorders of impulse control.
Substance-induced sexual behavior : Sexual thoughts or actions whose onset or intensification is attributable to a psychoactive substance or medication. A substance or medication effect can explain behavior that might otherwise appear hypersexual.
